what were children taught in schools?
biology taught childerent that german were master race & jews were inferior. history taught that Hitler saved germany from failing of weimar republic. boys learnt science & military, girls learnt domestic. everyone learnt race studies and eugenics.

how did the nazis control the schools?
teachers had to belong to the german teachers' league & had to attend courses to learn about nazi ideas. all lessons began and ended with the Hitler salute. from 1935 all textbooks had to be approved by the nazis.

what was the aim of nazi education?
to turn boys into soldiers, prepare girls to be good wives and mothers. teach nazi beliefs and be loyal nazis.

how else were children controlled?
they were encouraged (forced after 1935) to join youtrh groups e.g. hitler youth or league of german maidens. trained to be loyal soldiers to hitler (boys) & good wives/mothers (girls). indoctrinated with nazi ideas.

what activities did the hitler youth do?
meetings took place after school, at weekends, in holidays. boys learnt shooting &military drills. girls learnt housework, childcare. all took part in sport, hiking, camping and marches or rallies

who were the edelweiss pirates?
teenagers who hated the hitler youth. not an organised movement but independent youth gangs. over 2000 pirate groups e.g. navajos. mainly working class

how did they oppose and how were they punished?
they beat up hitler youth members, did graffiti, anti-war leaflets, avoided conscription, read and listened to banned literature and music. nazis were not really threatened by them

what was the swing youth?
a group similar to the edelweiss pirates but mainly children from wealthy families. wore american clothes, listened to american music, organised illegal dances

what did the nazis believe a woman's role was?
kinder, kirche, kuche (children, church, kitchen). stay at home and give up jobs. female doctors, civil servants and judges were sacked.

how did they 'encourage' women to do this?
got marriage loan (voucher) for 1000 marks when they were married, kept 250 marks for every child they had. women told how to dress, act, look. e.g. no smoking/ drinking, hair tied back, no make-up

were nazi policies towards women successful?
number of employed women fell, marriages & birth rates increased (could be due to stronger economy). german women's enterprise (ran classes, gave medals for having kids) had 6 million members, suggesting many women welcomed nazi policies
