What are examples of natural selction?
Some bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics as a result of mutations, which were then passed on. Peppered moths can be pale/dark but in areas of high pollution soot discolours trees so dark peppered moths are camoflauged and breed.

What was Darwin's theory of natural selection?
Within every species there is natural variation (differences due to genes). Organisms produce more young than will survive so there is competition for limited resources. Only those best adapted will survive & pass on their adaptations to their young.

What is evolution?
Evolution is the slow, continual change of organisms over a long period of time to become better adapted to their environment - these changes arise through mutations.

What was Lamarck's theory of evolution?
Lamarck believed in the inheritance of 'acquired characteristics': organisms that had a strong/improved characteristic, that was used often, could pass this change to their young. It had no genetic basis and we now know genes pass on changes.

How can evolution lead to the formation of a new species?
Natural selection must take place in geographic/reproductive isolation to avoid breeding between populations. The many mutations and adaptations may result in a new species - when different species' are competing the less adapted ones do not survive.
