Natural Selection
7 Stages
1 of 12
Variation
Individuals vary slightly because of differences in genes (caused by mutations)
2 of 12
Advantageous characteristics
Variations may better adapt some organisms to their environment than others
3 of 12
Over - production
Most organisms produce more young that will survive to adulthood
4 of 12
Struggle for Existance
Environment can only support a certain number so there is competition for survival between organisms
5 of 12
Survival of the fittest
Only the organisms which are really well adapted (i.e. advantageous characteristics) will survive
6 of 12
Advantageous genes passed onto offspring
Well adapted organisms will reproduce, therefore passing on their advantageous genes to their offspring
7 of 12
Gradual change
Population will lose poorly adapted individuals over time. Advantageous gene continues being passed on through generations.
8 of 12
What are mutations?
Changes to the genes
9 of 12
How do mutations occur?
Inherited from a parent or acquired during an organism's lifetime
10 of 12
Why are mutations important to evolution?
It produces a new form of a gene giving the organism an adaptation making it better suited to its environment
11 of 12
Why is that useful?
Makes it more likely to survive, reproduce and pass on advantageous gene
