What is a natural hazard?
A natural event or process that does't affect people

What is a natural disaster?
When the natural hazard has social impacts such as death, injury, economic damage e.g damage to property and infastructure

When can an event be classed as a natural disaster?
When it involves people e.g death, injuries, economic damage and mainly just disruption to people's lives.

When is a natural event not classed as a natural disaster?
When it occurs in an uninhabitable location and no people are affected

What are the two categories hazards can be placed into?
Geophysical and hydro-meteorological

What are geophysical hazards caused by?
They are caused by internal earth processes or tectonic activity resulting in volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes. They can also be caused by external processes involving mass movements resulting in landslides, mudslides and avalanches

What are hydro-meteorological hazards caused by?
They are caused by water and weather patterns coming together. These result in floods, tropical cyclones, storms, droughts, fires and hurricanes

What does the disaster risk equation state?
Risk = frequency or magnitude of hazard x vulnerability / capacity to cope
