National 5 chemistry

This an over view of the new national 5 scottish examination course.  Just to let you know, these are only the stuff I struggled with.  I may have skipped some areas as I already felt confident in them.

?
Name the 3 states of matter
Solid, liquid and gas
1 of 17
How can you tell there has been a chemical change? Name 2
Gas given off, heat energy given off, light energy given off and change in colour
2 of 17
What are the factors affecting the rate of a chemical reaction?
Particle size, temprature, catalyst and concentraion
3 of 17
Explain how each one affects the rate of reaction.
PS= Decreasing the particle size increases the chance of collision. T= the hotter the particles the greater chance of collisions. Conc= There is a greater number particles therfore they are more likely to react.
4 of 17
What happens to the rate if time decreases?
Rate increases.
5 of 17
What relationship does time and rate have?
An inverse relationship.
6 of 17
Name 4 ways that a chemical reaction could be followed to work out how fast the reaction is proceeding.
Volume of gas, Ph, mass, temprature
7 of 17
Where are electrons located and arranged within an atom?
In electron shells and in electron clouds
8 of 17
What is the maximum number of electrons in the first three shells?
2,8,8
9 of 17
What are isotopes?
Atoms with the same atomic number but different number of neutrons.
10 of 17
What is the relative atomic mass of an element?
the average mass of the isotopes
11 of 17
What is an Ion?
It is an atom which has lost/gained an electron to become charged
12 of 17
What is a covalent compound?
A compound between non-metals in which they share electrons.
13 of 17
What is metallic bonding?
Bonding between metals in which the electons flow free.
14 of 17
What is an Ionic compound?
A compound between a metal ion and a non-metal ion.
15 of 17
Name the two types of covalent compound and give an example for both.
Discrete molecule= water Covalent Network= Silicon Carbide
16 of 17
Name 2 proporties of an ionic compound.
Charge, High boiling point, high melting point, solid=non-conductor, liquid=conductor
