Aria
A song, especially from an opera or oratorio.

A traditional male Scottish song about hard work and working conditions (often involving farming).

Gaelic psalms (or long tunes)
Religious songs from the Western Isles of Scotland that can be sung slightly differently by individual members of a church congregation, creating an improvised feel, usually led by a solo male singer known as the precentor.

Gospel
A style of religious singing that emerged in 19th century America, influenced by the spirituals of black slaves and Protestant evangelical church music. In the 20th century, gospel also became a popular song category not linked to religion.

Indian
All styles of Indian music- vocal music, Indian classical music and instrumental styles. Indian melodies are formed using special scales/ modes called ragas and various set rhythmic patterns known as talas. Instruments- sitar and tabla.

Minimalist
A term 1st used in the early 1970s to describe music that uses simple, repetitive melodies and rhythms that are gradually extended by adding more and more of these simple "layers" of music until a more complex structure develops.

Pibroch
A term for more serious and complex solo highland bagpipe music - pibrochs use theme and variation structure.

Symphony
A large orchestral work, normally in 3 or 4 movements, which can last up to an hour or more. A wide variety of musical structures, keys and emotions are often used in the musical journey of a symphony. Composers - Mozart, Beethoven and Mahler.

Waulking Song
A traditional Scottish Gaelic song, usually with a repetitive rhythm, that was sung (mainly by women) when they were doing tedious or repetitive work.
