A TIME SIGNATURE where each beat is divisible by 3.

Where normal accents of time signature are moved around to create different kinds of rhythms in a piece of music, or when separate parts play different rhythms at the same time.

An Italian term indicating that the music is to be played at a moderate speed.

An Italian term indicating that the music should slow down gradually. Usually abbreviated as rit.

A term indicating that the tempo of a passage of music (or an entire piece) should be gently increased or decreased at will by the performer for an expressive effect.

Alberti Bass
A broken chord pattern that is used as a bass accompaniment. The pattern is often: lowest note of chord-highest note of chord-middle note of chord-highest note of chord. For example C G E G.

Binary Form
A musical structure (AB), common in Baroque music, made up of 2 sections, A and B, each of which us usually repeated. The B section is sometimes longer that the A section.

A short 'ending' section that concludes a piece of music.

Contrapuntal (counterpoint)
Where 2 or more different musical parts (which sound complete in themselves) are played simultaneously to create a single,harmonious whole, a popular style in the Baroque period, but used by composers since.

A bass melody or motif that is constantly repeated with varying melody lines above it.

Where voices or instruments sounding together more in the same rhythm.

Where 2 or more voices or instruments sound together but have different rhythms. The term evolved in the 16th century renaissance period.

A musical structure (A B A C A...) where the main theme (the A section) alternates with several new or contrasting sections of music (known as episodes).

A term used to describe vocal music in which different lyrics are sung to the same musical verse each time.
