How do you name molecules with functional groups?
Using similar steps to naming alkanes. 1: Identify the parent chain and name its stem. 2: Identify alkyl chains or functional groups and add the prefix or suffix. 3: Number the alkyl and functional groups.
1 of 8
What do you do if the suffix starts with a vowel and why?
Remove the -e from the alkane part of the name because it's awkward to pronounce 2 vowels together.

What do you do if the suffix starts with a consonant and why?
You keep the -e on the alkane part of the name because the name can be pronounced easily.
3 of 8
Why do you never have to number an aldehyde suffix?
Because it's always on carbon-1.
4 of 8
How do you list groups if the molecule has more than 1 of them?
You list them alphabetically.

When do you use the terms di-, tri- and tetra-?
Di- indicated 2 identical groups, tri- for 3 and tetra- for 4.

What are the steps for naming halogenoalkanes?
1: Find the longest carbon chain. 2: Put the position and name of the halogen in front. The halogen is always halo-.
