MY B1 SCIENCE FLASHCARDS.

?
What does metabolic rate mean?
if you exercise more energy is used by the bod. excercise increases the metabolic rate which means he chemical reaction in cells work faster
1 of 20
what factors can affect your metabolic rate?
your metabolic rate can be affected by the genes you inherit from your parents
2 of 20
what are the two type of cholesterol and what does each type do?
there are two types of cholesterol you need "good" cholesterol for your cell membranes and to make vital substances. the other type is called "bad"cholesterol which can lead to heart disease.
3 of 20
what can you do to lower your blood cholesterol?
food rich in saturated fat can also increase blood cholesterol levels or by exercising regulary va person can increase their metabolic rate and lower high cholesterol levels
4 of 20
what health problems can obesity lead to?
health problems that obesity can lead to are sever health problems like type 2 diabetes.
5 of 20
is it also unhealthy to be very underweight. Why might they suffer from deficiency diseases?
they might suffer from deficiency diseases due to lack of vitamin and minerals.
6 of 20
what is pathogen and how do they make us ill?
pathogens are tiny microorganisms usually bacteria or viruses. they make us ill by entering our body and reproducing toxins.
7 of 20
washing hands remove pathogens from them. semmelwesis was the first doctor to realise this, what did he tell his staff to do?
he told his staff to wash their hands between treating patients .
8 of 20
what prevents pathogen fro entering the body?
the skin prevents pathogen getting into the body.
9 of 20
white bloods are part of the IMMUNE SYSTEM what three things do they do to defend the body?
White blood cell first digest and destroy them. they produce antibodies to help destroy particular pathogen. then they produce antitoxins to counteract the toxins pathogen produced.
10 of 20
who first discovered penicillin and what is it?
Alexander Fleming first discovered penicillin and it is an antibiotic.
11 of 20
why are antibiotics unable to kill viruses?
viruses are difficult to kill because they reproduce inside the body cells.
12 of 20
how do u grow cultures?
give them a liquid containing nutrients, provide warmth and oxygen and then keep it incubated at 25 degrees
13 of 20
what must u do to keep the culture pure?
kill all the bacteria on the equipment and prevent microorganisms from the air getting into the equipment.
14 of 20
MRSA has evolved through natural selection, how?
the MRSA "super bug" is a bacterium that has evolved through natural selection. MRSA and other bacteria have become resistant to the common antibiotics.
15 of 20
wat is used to make vaccine?
dead or inactive forms of a pathogen are used to make vaccine.
16 of 20
what can vaccine protect against?
it prevents further infection because the body responds quickly by producing antibodies.
17 of 20
how do vaccine work?
small amounts of dead or inactive pathogen is put into your body. The antigens in the vaccine stimulate your white blood cells into making antibodies the antibodies then destroy the antigents without any risk. you are immune to futureinfections patho
18 of 20
what are the advantages of vaccination?
The advantages of vaccinations are obvious - they stop individuals becoming ill. If enough people are vaccinated, vaccinations can also stop pathogens infecting whole populations. There are also risks to having vaccinations.
19 of 20
what are the disadvantages of vaccination?
fewer and fewer children were vaccinated, the three diseases began to spread more easily and the number of cases began to increase
