Germany, in 1685, but moved to England in 1710.

He composed 'Zadok the Priest' for the coranation of George II. He wrote music for the Calvinist church and the Church of England.

Operas and Oratorios (religious version of an opera - not usually acted out). Choral music.

What is choral music?
Choral music is sung by soloists and choirs. Choral music can be: Sacred music or Secular music.

What does Sacred (religious) music include?
Mass - part of the Catholic church service , set to music. Requiem - mass for the dead. Chorale - a hymn. Oratorio - a biblical version of an opera. Cantata - vocal pieces made up of arias.

What does Secular (non-religious) music include?
Opera - divided in three main parts. Cantata - vocal pieces made up of two or three arias, separated by recitatives. You can get secular cantatas.

What are the main types of Baroque opera?
Opera Seria - serious, mythological themes. Opera Buffa - lighter, everyday themes. Opera Comique - like Opera Buffa but with spoken recitatives. Operetta - not big enough to be a proper opera.

What is a recitative?
A RECITATIVE is a song which tell the story and moves it along. The rhythm of the words imitate the rhythm of normal speech.

What is a chorus?
A CHORUS is sung by a choir. They are usually written for SATB choires. Baroque choirs were all male - boy sopranos used.

What is an aria?
An ARIA is a solo vocal piece (backed by an orchestra). The main characters express there thoughts and feelings. They can be known as 'airs' instead.

When did Handel write the Messiah?
1741. He took ideas from earlier compositions.

Why and who was it popular with?
It had uplifting choruses - like the Hallelujah Chorus. Mozart liked it so much he arranged his own version of it.

When is it performed?
At Christmas time, though it was originally composed for Easter.

Who put together the libretto (text - lyrics) ?
Charles Jennens - took words from the Old and New Testament. Words taken from the King James Bible.

What instruments was it composed for?
SATB choir, SATB soloists, a full baroque orchestra. Oboes, basson, trumpets, timpani, strings and basso continuo and a harpsichord. Mozart's arrangement added flutes, clarinets, French hors, trombones and an organ.

What are the three sections it is divided up into?
First section: Describes the prophecies about Jesus' birth. Middle section: About the persecution and crucifixion of Jesus. Last section: Is about his resurrection.

What's in each section?
Arias and recitatives for soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists. Choruses. A duet, an instrumental section. Hallelujah chorus is at the end of the second chorus.
