Overall shape of a composition

Binary
A form with two sections, A and B, usually repeated. A usually modulates from tonic to dominant or relative major. B returns to tonic via other keys.

Opening pasaage or section which prepares for the first main idea (e.g in a song the piano has an introduction)

Phrase
Short passage of music comparable to speaking or writing. 2 or four bars long

Rondo
A form comprising several statements of a main section interspersed with contrasting episodes. Simplest- ABACA, A is recurring and B and C are episodes.

Sonata form
Large scale from which evolved in the classical period. It combines elements of binary and ternary form

Ternary
Form with three sections (ABA). Opening is repeated, B provides contrast

Strophic
Has the same or similar music for each stanza of the poem being set
