Culture

The set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterise an institution, orgnisation or group.

An approach to dealing with the challenges of cultural diversity and bringing about the advancement of marginalised or disadvantaged groups.

Positive endorsement, even celecration of cultural differences, allowing marginalised groups to assert themselves by reclaiming an authentic sense of cultural identity.

The application of values and theories drawn from European culture to other groups and peoples, implying a biased or distorted world view.

Post-colonialism

Seeks to address the cultural conditions characteristic of newly-independant societies with the purpose to expose and overturn the cultural and pyschological dimensions of colonial rule.

Orientalism

A focus on the political hegemony of western countries over the world, focusing on the Orient in particular. Notices the maintenance of stereotypical fictions which demeans non-western cultures such as the 'mysterious East' and 'inscrutable Chinese.'
