How is classical conditioning displayed?
The neutral tokens become secondary reinforcers, and so can be used to modify behaviour.
1 of 18
What does the Sensory register hold information about?
Each of the senses-the eyes, ears, nose, fingers, tongue.
2 of 18
What is the capacity and duration of the sensory register?
Very large capacity but very brief duration.
3 of 18
What is the purpose of Attention?
It is the first step in remembering something.
4 of 18
What is the purpose of the Short-term memory?
Information held in the STM can be used for immediate tasks e.g. working on a maths problem.
5 of 18
What is the capacity and duration of the STM?
Limited capacity (7+-2) and limited duration (information will disappear relatively quickly if it isn't rehearsed).
6 of 18
What is the purpose of Maintenance rehearsal?
Will eventually allow information in the STM to become information in the LTM.
7 of 18
What is the capacity and duration of the Long-term memory?
Both are potentially unlimited.
8 of 18
What is the purpose of retrieval?
The process of getting information from the LTM involves the information passing back through STM.

Name 2 strengths of the multi-store model of memory.
Controlled lab studies on capacity, duration and coding support the existence of a separate short and long term memory store. Case studies have shown that different areas of the brain are involved in STM and LTM from individuals with brain damage.

Name 2 weaknesses of the multi-store model of memory.
The MSM suggests that both STM and LTM are single 'unitary' stores but research does not support this. Craik & Lockhart suggested that enduring memories are created by the processing you do, rather than through maintenance rehearsal.
11 of 18
What are the 3 different types of long-term memory?
Episodic, Semantic and Procedural.
12 of 18
What is episodic memory?
An event or personal experience e.g. your first day of school.
13 of 18
What is semantic memory?
Knowledge about the world which is shared by everyone e.g. mathematics and language.
14 of 18
What is procedural memory?
Concerned with skills and remembering how to do something e.g. knowing how to tie a shoe lace.
15 of 18
What evidence is there from brain scans?
Distinction between the three types of memory is supported by brain scans. It shows the different areas of the brain are active when the different kinds of LTMs are active.
16 of 18
What does the case study of HM show?
His ability to form new LTMs was affected by the destruction of his hippocampus but he retained his pre-existing LTMs.
17 of 18
What evidence is there to support the idea that episodic and semantic memories are separate?
Researchers studied patients with Alzheimer's disease and found some patients who retain the ability to form new episodic memories cannot form semantic memories, suggesting a separation between the two abilities.
