What is some supporting evidence for the multi-store model (msm)?
(brain scans)
different areas of the brain activated with the LTM and STM- Beardsley- Prefrontal cortex responsible for STM but not LTM- Squire et al- found the hippocampus is active when LTM is active but not the STM.

What is some supporting evidence for the MSM?
Shallice and Warrington found that KF (who was brain damaged from a car crash) could recall one or two digits in the digit span test however, he could recall events after the crash. The stores are separate.
2 of 11
What is a weakness of the KF case study?
KF could still recall things that were visual from his STM- if the store was only coded acoustically then KF should not be able to recall visual info- more than one type of STM.

What is one weakness of the msm?
(unitary)
Baddeley says the unitary nature of the explanation means that it cannot explain things like how some of KF’s stm wasn’t damaged. He said that his working memory model was a better explanation is better due to separate stores.

What is one weakness of the msm?
(rehearsal)
Craik and Watkins found that it wasnt the amount of rehearsal that was important, instead, it was the quality of rehearsal. They say elaborative rehearsal is needed where you attach meaning to the information.
5 of 11
What is one weakness of the msm?
(type of ltm)
Research from Tulving showed that there is more than one store in the ltm as people like Clive Wearing can still play piano but can’t remember events like his marriage. MSM can’t explain Clive Wearing’s situation.

What is one limitation of the WMM?
(CE)
Eslinger and Damasio- EVR case study- Had brain tumour removed- Perform well on tasks for reasoning- but not tasks that needed decision making- CE is more complex and potentially has different components.
7 of 11
What is one limitation of the WMM?
(not a complete model)
The WMM cannot fully explain stm due to the fact it doesn’t explain what happens to info that doesn’t go to either VSSP or the PL. Also, it doesn’t explain HOW info is transferred from one store to the other.

What is one support for the WMM?
(Explain memory impairments)
The MSM cannot explain cases like KF but the WMM can as it can say that these brain damaged patients were struggling due to the separate components of memory responsible for different visual and verbal functions.
9 of 11
What is one support for the WMM?
(two visual tasks)
Baddeley showed the existence of independent slave systems by seeing that ptpts would struggle to do two visual tasks than a visual and verbal task. This shows one slave system being used and the CE distributing workload.

What is one support for the WMM?
(scans)
PET scans show that when ptpts do different tasks that use different parts of the stm, different parts of the brain are more active. This shows there are separate components for certain tasks.
