What are all the way down the digestive system and what sorts?
There's muscular tissue all the way down the digestive system. There are: -longitudinal muscles down the length of the gut. -circular muscles running in circles around the gut.
1 of 11
What is the jobs of the different muscle types? What is the action called?
To squeeze the food along. This squeezing action is called peristalsis.
2 of 11
What do waves of circular muscle contractions do?
Push the food along the gut.
3 of 11
What do waves of longitudinal muscle contractions do?
Run slightly ahead to help keep the food in a ball.
4 of 11
Where is bile produced and where is it stored before release?
Bile is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder before it's released into the small intestine.
5 of 11
What does the hydrochloric acid in the stomach make the pH? What does bile do and what does this mean for the enzymes?
It makes the pH too acidic for enzymes in the small intestine to work properly. Bile is alkaline - it neutralises the acid and makes conditions alkaline. The enzymes in the small intestine work best in these alkaline conditions.
6 of 11
What does bile also do? What does this give/mean?
Bile emulsifies fats/ It breaks the fat into tiny droplets. This gives a much bigger surface area of fat for the enzyme lipase to work on - which makes its digestion faster.
7 of 11
What is the inside of the small intestine covered in? What do the features allow?
The inside of the small intestine is covered in millions and millions of these tiny little projections called villi. Villi have three features that make absorbing digested food into the bloodstream really efficient.
8 of 11
Name the features of villi (1)
They have a big surface area so that digested food is absorbed much more quickly into the blood.
9 of 11
Name the features of villi (2)
They have a single layer of surface cells so that digested food diffuses quickly over a short distance.
10 of 11
Name the features of villi (3)
They have a very good blood supply via a capillary network to assist quick absorption of digested food.
