What is Moment?
Moment is the turning effect of a force around a fixed point called a pivot
1 of 7
What effects the size of moment?
The size of the force applied and the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force
2 of 7
How does this help in daily life?
This explains why less force is needed to open a door by pushing at the side furthest from the hinge than at the side closest to the hinge. To push at the hinge side of the door requires more force to be exerted because the distance is smaller.
3 of 7
What is the equation of Moment?
Moment= Force x the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot (M=FxD)
4 of 7
What is M measured in?
Measured in newtons-metre, Nm
5 of 7
What is F measured in?
Measured in newtons, N
6 of 7
What is D measured in?
Measured in metres, m
