Moles and Empirical and Molecular formula

?
What is a mole?
Simply the name given to a certain number: 6.023x10power 23
1 of 7
What is the number of a mole called?
Avogadro's number or constant
2 of 7
Equation for the number of moles
No. of moles= mass in g/ RFM
3 of 7
Eg. How many moles are there in 66g of CO2?
12+(16x2)=44 66/44=1.5 moles
4 of 7
What does the empirical formula give you?
The smallest whole number ratio of atoms in a compound.
5 of 7
How do you get the empirical formula? (Method)
1. List the elements in the compound. -Underneath, write their experimental % or masses. -Divide each % or mass by the RAM for the element. -Turn the numbers into a nice ratio and simplify.
6 of 7
What does the molecular formula of a compound tell you?
The actual number of atoms of each element in a single molecule.
