what is the function of the nucleus?
the nucleus contains DNA.DNA contains the instructions for making proteins e.g the enzymes used in chemical reactions of respiration (in animal and plant cells) and photosynthesis (in plant cells only0
1 of 13
what is the function of the cytoplasm?
The gel like substance where protiens like enzymes are made. some enzyme- controlled reactions take place in the cytoplasm e.g the reactions of anaerobic respiration.
2 of 13
what is the function of the cell membrane?
It holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.It also lets gases and water pass through freely while acting as a barrier to other chemicals.
3 of 13
what is the function of the mitochondria?
These are where the enzymes needed for the reactions of aerobic respiration are found, and where the reactions take place.
4 of 13
Name three things that plant cells have and animal cells don't.
cell wall-made of cellulose and supports the cell and strengthens it Vacuole- contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts. Chloroplasts- where the reactions for photosynthesis take place.
5 of 13
what are yeast cells?
yeast are single celled microorganisms. yeast are used to make bread and wine. a yeast cell contains a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and cell wall.
6 of 13
what is the definition of an enzyme?
Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions.
7 of 13
what is the lock and key model? part 1
Chemical reactions normally involve being split apart or joint together. a substrate is a molecule that is changed in a reaction. Every enzyme has an active site- the part where a substrate joins on to the enzyme.
8 of 13
what is the lock and key model? part 2
Enzymes are really picky- they usually only speed up one reaction, this is because for an enzyme to work, a substrate has to be the correct shape to fit the active site.
9 of 13
What two things affect how quickly an enzyme works?
The temperature and the PH level. changing the temperature changes the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction.
10 of 13
How does the temperature affect a enzyme?
A higher temperature increases the rate at first however, if it gets too hot, some of the bongs holding the enzymes together break.this changed the shape of the active site,so the substrate wont fit and the enzyme wont work and will become denatured.
11 of 13
what is respiration?
Respiration is not breathing in and out. respiration is a series of chemical reactions that release energy by breaking down large food molecules, this happens in every living cells.
12 of 13
Name three things that energy released for respiration is used for.
movement-energy is needed to make muscles contract. Active Transport- this process uses energy to move substances in and out of cells. Synthesis of large molecules- large molecules are made by joining smaller ones together.
