ADSORPTION (Solid-liquid/gas)
The active sites of the stationary phase interacts with solutes. Less tightly bound compounds eluted out by the mobile phase at earlier time

PARTITION (liquid-liquid/gas)
Solute dissolved in liquid phase coated on surface of solid support. Some solutes dissolve in stationary phase coating and stay there, so elute last. Some do not dissolve in coating, diluting faster. Partition coefficient using solubility.

ION EXCHANGE (liquid-solid)
Ions attached by covalent bond. X+ (fixed ions) attached to matrix. Y- are positively charged (counter ions) connected by electrostatic/ionic bond. Stationary phase has ionically charged surface, opposite of that of that of the eluents/solutes

SIZE EXCLUSION (liquid-solid)
Separation due to difference in molecular weight. Higher molecular weight = separated/eluted out first because move through interparticle spaces. Small weights = trapped in intermolecular spaces. Two types: Gel filtration, gel permeation

AFFINITY (column)
macromolecule (such as a protein) is isolated and purified by passing it in solution through a column treated with a substance having a ligand for which the macromolecule has an affinity that causes it to be retained on the column
