Quick response manufacturing (QRM)
Making a product to order, meeting consumer demand, instead of manufacturing it and it going to stock.
1 of 13
Electronic point of sale (EPOS)
Using barcode readers to send sales data to distributors and manufacturers in order to maintain correct stock levels.
2 of 13
Just in time (JIT)
The organisation of production so that customers get their orders just in time. This avoids carrying stock of materials and components, and storing finished goods.
3 of 13
Kanbans
Containers labelled with bar codes, containing info of part and quantity contained. Inside container is card with same info (Kanban)
4 of 13
Sequencing
Part of JIT system. Once parts and materials have arrived they need to be put in their individual work cells.Controlled by computers.
5 of 13
Master production schedule (MPS)
Computer-controlled scheduling system that sets the quantity of each product to be made in a given time.Used in the car industry. Materials Requirements planning (MRP) software is used to order correct materials and components for the product.
6 of 13
Telematics
An electronic system for tracking a product from consumer order through to assembly and dispatch.
7 of 13
Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS)
Organising production equipment to allow manufacture of a variety of different products, as opposed to dedicated systems that can only make a single type. Such production allows for changes in consumer demand.
8 of 13
Press formers
This equipment can be flexible, as the dies can be changed to make different products. Limited number of dies available.
9 of 13
Computer numerical controlled (CNC) punches
These can be programmed to punch a variety of designs out of sheet material.
10 of 13
CNC laser cutters
Computer-controlled lasers and flame cutters can be programmed to cut out a wide variety of profiles, slots, holes, etc.
11 of 13
CNC lathes and milling machines
Lathes and milling machines can be programmed to do highly accurate one-off jobs or batches of items.
12 of 13
Robot arms
Programmed to do: same job all the time on one product:same job on different products:entirely different jobs.
