The point of origin for all species; all species belong to one of these domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya.

Traditionally there are five main kingdoms: Plantae, Animalia, Fungi and Protocista. These are all eukaryotes. Prokaryotae is the group for organisms that do not possess a nucleus

Phylum
Contains all the groups of organisms that have the same body plan

Class
A group of organisms that all posses the same general traits

Order
A sub-division of the Class, using additional information about the organism, e.g. dietary traits

Family
A group of closely related Genus groups

Genus
A group of closely related species

Species
The basic unit of classification. All members within the same species show variation, however are essentially the same
