Evidence of...
Model-free learning effect on motivation.
1 of 9
Learning Task
1st part of experiment. P's presented with series of circles + contained within the circles were lines. Need to find the line that is either horizontal or vertical as fast as poss. Other circles are distractors.
2 of 9
Learning Task
Unbeknownst to the p's, the target in red circle winning a higher amount of money and green meant lower monetary value (playing for small monetary rewards).
3 of 9
Attention Task
2nd part of experiment, as far as p's concerned its similar to the 1st experiment. Again looking for the horizontal or vertical line . This time it would be contained within an atypical shape. Critical element is the distractor, on some trials there

Attention Task
was a red distractor and others there was a green distractor (other distractors would be other randomised colours)
5 of 9
Results
When red distractor was present p's were slower. When green distractor present they were faster. Idea that they learn to associate red circle with winning more money, even though weren't explicitly aware red was paired with high reward. Model free

Results: Value-Driven Capture
learning as they built up this association. Later on this causes an orienting response. This makes them slower. This automatic orienting to distractor is called value-driven capture. Demonstration of model-free learning in humans.

Conclusions
Asked p's at end of experiment if they had any idea about the relationship between the colours and monetary reward and they didn't. If it was model-based learning then they should've done (should have some cognition related to it)

Conclusions
This research tells us you learn the value of a stimulus + that value associated cue can capture and motivate attention rapidly. Could apply this to food + obesity- food branding precedes the enjoyment of eating the food, drinking and drugs also.
