Mixed Bunch 2

?
Why is courtship necessary? (1)
To recognise members of their own species to ensure mating takes place between members of the same species because only then can fertile offspring be produced.
1 of 15
Why is courtship necessary? (2)
Identify a mate capable of breeding.
2 of 15
Why is courtship necessary?
Forming a pair bond and synchronize mating.
3 of 15
The difference between heirachy and phylogenic relationship?
a hierachy is groups within groups and no overlap between groups. A phylogeny is based on evolutionary relationships.
4 of 15
How does light affect transpiration?
Light - More means that the stomata opens more for photosynthesis with transpiration as a by product.
5 of 15
How does temperature affect transpiration?
Higher temperature increases kinetic energy and speed of water molecules which increases the rate of evaporation.
6 of 15
How does humidity affect transpiration?
Less humid means the air is more dry so the concentration gradient increases and transpiration increases.
7 of 15
How does air movement affect transpiration?
The faster the air movement the faster humid air is removed and increased transpiration.

How is artery structure related to function?
Muscle layer is thick so it can constrict and dilate to control volume of blood passing. Thick elastic layer - to stretch @ systole and recoil @ diastole to maintain high pressure and smooth pressure surges caused by heartbeats.
9 of 15
How is arteriole structure related to function?
Muscle layer is thicker so constriction and dilation can control flow of blood into capillaries. Elastic is thinner as lower pressure.
10 of 15
How is vein structure related to function?
Muscle layer thin - blood carried away from the tissues. Elastic thin because low pressure. Valves to ensure blood doesn't flow backwards due to low pressure.
11 of 15
How is capillary structure related to function?
Numerous + highly branched - large surface are for diffusion. One/Two cells think - so short diffusion pathway. Narrow so no cell is far from a capillary, red blood cells are squeezed against surface.
12 of 15
How can a lack of proteins cause a build-up of tissue fluid?
When fluid is forced out of capillaries by pressure red blood cells and proteins are left. Not having enough proteins mean that at the venous end, the water potential is not low enough to draw water back into the capillaires by osmosis.
13 of 15
Biodiversity should be maintained to?
Prevent extinction of species.
14 of 15
What does repeating a measurement do?
Minimize anomalies and increase reliability of mean.
