Mitosis has a five stage process. It is called IPMAT. What does it stand for?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase.

What happens in Interphase? 3 things.
DNA replicated, invisible chromosomes, protein synthesis

What happens in Prophase? 3 things.
Visible chromosomes, nuclear envelope breakdown, nucleolus disappears

What happens in Metaphase? 2 things.
Spindles form, chromosomes line up at cell equator

What happens in Anaphase? 1 thing.
Spindle fibres contract and pull chromatids towards poles

What happens in Telophase? 4 things.
Chromatids reach poles, nuclear envelope and nucleolus reform, spindle disintegrates, cell divides.

Growth, repair, and differentiation

Why mitosis necessary for growth?
Two haploid cells fuse to form a diploid cell which has all genetic info for forming new organism, must have same set of genetic info if organism is to resemble parents, mitosis ensures cell divides to give identical group of cells

Why is mitosis necessary for differentiation?
Cells change/differentiate to give groups of specialised cells like xylem. Different cell types divide by mitosis, gives set of tissues of identical cells to perform specific function - tissues must have cells with same structure to function

Why is mitosis necessary for repair?
When cells are damaged or die, new cells must have identical structure/function. If not exact copies, tissue does not function effectively. Mitosis is the means which new cells replaced dead cells.
