Syncopation
When notes are accented off the beat - the weak part of the beat is often emphasised.

Panning
Panning is the distribution of a sound signal (either monaural or stereophonic pairs) into a new stereo or multi-channel sound field determined by a pan control setting. Both the bass guitar parts and the strummed guitar parts are panning.

Additive/Subtractive rhythms
Changing the note values within a phrase, either adding shorter note values to fit into a longer beat, or changing shorter note values to longer ones whilst keeping to the original time signature.

Contrary motion
Melodic motion in which one part rises in pitch while the other descends.

When motifs are repeated by different parts at different times

Ostinato
A pattern or phrase that is repeated again and again.

2nd Inversion chords
The second inversion of a chord is when the fifth of the chord is in the bass. For example, G in the bass of a C major chord.

Layering
Adding new musical parts, commonly one at a time. The parts will often interact with each other forming a complex texture.

Rhythmic displacement
Where the motif is moved to different beats in a bar, keeping the motif’s rhythmic structure intact.

Contrapuntal
having two or more independent but harmonically related melodic parts sounding together

Resultant melody
A new melody that emerges when a variety of parts play their melody at the same time.

Multi-tracked
The way that all the tracks are recored in layers. This means you can control all the parts separately.

Monophonic
having a single melodic line without harmonies or melody in counterpoint.

Aelian mode on E
The Aeolian mode is a musical mode or, in modern usage, a diatonic scale called the natural minor scale. It stars on the 6th degree of the diatonic scale.

Looping
An electronic sample that is repeated over and over again.

Phase shifing
The process of adding a unit of time to one version of a musical motif and then playing it simultaneously with one or more other versions of the same motif. This results in the two(or more) versions being out of sync. Eventually they become in sync
