Milgram was inspired by the behaviour of nazi soldiers in WW2 and wanted to see whether individuals acted in an autonomous state (controlled by free-will) or an agentic state (controlled by authority.)

Milgram's study was a lab experiment as it took place in an artificial setting (Yale University) and had high levels of controls (Pre-determined draw of roles/Sample shock of 35V.)

The IV was the manipulated prods used by Mr Williams, and the DV was the measured voltage of electric shocks administered by participants.

Milgram's study was a snapshot study as it was carried out once and only lasted a day, and only concentrated on a small sample.

Sample Method?
The sample method was a volunteer sample, and all participants were paid $4.50 to turn up regardless of whether they took part in the experiment. They were recruited through direct mailing and adverts in local newspapers.

Participants?
The participants consisted of 40 males, aged between 20-50 living in the New Haven area of America. They all came from a variety of occupations and backgrounds. For example some participants were teachers, others were salesmen and postal clerks.
