40 males ages 20-50- volunteer sampling- advert in New Haven News- Jobs ranged in pps postal clerks to engineers- education ranged from low level to Phd

What were the pps told about the research? Were was it held at? and How much were they paid?
They were told it was about memory, learning and punishment- it was held at Yale University and were paid $4.50 just for turning up and didn't have to stay in the study

"teacher" (naive pps)- "learner" aka Mr Wallace (confederate, 47 yr old accountant) and "experimenter" (confederate, 31 yr old biology teacher"

How did they decide who was the teacher and who was the learner?
Mr Wallace always had to be the learner so they drew rigged lots and the genuine pp always became the "teacher"

After they drew who was the teacher/learner what did they do next?
all three went into the other room and they wired up Mr Wallace using barrier paste, wires etc

What size shock was the teacher given as a sample?
45 volts from a hidden battery

30 switches, plus labels every 4 switches saying things like "danger severe shock" and "***"

The leaner stopped making any moans. Prior to 315v the teacher could here the learner moaning.

How did Milgram address some ethical issues?
He debriefed the pps straight after the experiment and explained the purpose of the study and that the shocks were fake. He also ensured that the pps were in a state of well being before they left the study
