What is an omnidirectional microphone?
Used to capture ambient noise from all directions (it is general and non focused so no sound with overpower the rest)

What is a cardioid microphone?
Used to emphasise sound from the chosen direction (while leaving some latitude for the sides, e.g mic movement/ambiance) + Handheld microphones are often cardioid

What is a hypercardiod microphone?
An exaggerated version of a cardioid, very directional and eliminates most noise from sides and behind. Often used to isolate sound from especially ambient areas

What is a bidirectional microphone?
Figure of 8, equal sound pick up form two directions. Often used in interviews to pick up both speakers.
