What is the purpose of methadone?
To be a replacement drug for heroin as it is less harmful to the individual. It is a process of opioid detoxification that aims to detoxify dependent heroin users quickly

Mimics heroin at the synapse and reduces/removes the withdrawal symptoms of heroin, still providing the pain relief and relaxation

How is methadone administered?
Taken orally and given one dosage per day by pharmacists

They can be trusted to self-administer methadone without the pharmacist present and eventually can detoxify (reduce amount of methaodne taken until clean from it)

The NHS checks up on the addicts every 3 months to ensure they are still taking methadone and aren't taking any other drugs
