Where is copper extracted from?
Copper is extracted from naturally occurring copper ore by heating it with carbon, but using this process uses lots of energy and can be expensive.

Why do industries use electrolysis?
Because if the metal is very impure, has other metals stuck to it or mixed with it, e.g copper, it can be purified using electrolysis by using an electric current to break down compounds into simpler substances. Although, it can be expensive

How is electricity passed on in electrolysis?
Through the liquid electrolyte, e.g copper sulphate solution

What are electrodes?
They are used allow electricity to pass through the electrolyte.

What is the Anode?
The positive electrode (+) that contains the impure copper

What is the Cathode?
The negative electrode (-) that contains the pure copper.

How does electrolysis work?
An electric current is passed through the electrolyte, the anode loses mass as the copper oxidises, and the cathode gains the mass as copper is deposited. All of the impurities of the metal sink to the bottom.

What is an alloy? Give examples.
An alloy is a mixture of two or more metallic elements, e.g bronze and steel. Alloys improves the properties of a metal, as it makes it stronger and resistant to corrosion.

What is a smart alloy?
It is an alloy that can be bent and twisted, e.g an alloy of nickel and nitinol and can be for the frames of reading glasses.
