What is a metal ore?
A rock which contains enough metal to make it profitable to extract it.
1 of 8
What is a "Native" metal?
A metal that doesnt react with anything so is not found as an ore. Things such as Gold.
2 of 8
What is reduction with carbon?
It is a way to extract a metal. If it is less reactive than carbon then you can use carbon. The oxyen in the metal ore bonds with carbon, leaving the metal unbonded
3 of 8
What is electrolysis?
Chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution containing metal ions. It is a way of extracting metals more reactive than carbon.
4 of 8
What is an ion?
An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
5 of 8
If I have Potassium Chloride and I use electrolysis which ion will go to the cathode and which ion will go to the anode?
The chloride ion will go to the anode which will change back into an atom. The Potassium ion will go to the cathode which will turn back into an atom.
6 of 8
What is a "finite resource"?
Something that doesn't last forever.
7 of 8
Why is recycling metals a good idea?
There will be less reason to mine ores.
