Metal extraction- chemistry unit two

Hey guys

Here are a few revision cards to test yourself on metal extraction

Hope it helps

:)

?
What type of ores are metals usually found in?
Oxide or sulphide ores
1 of 11
How are oxides formed from sulphides?
By roasting in air
2 of 11
What are the conditions for extracting iron?
Blast furnace and a high temperature of around 1200 degrees
3 of 11
What is the limitation of using carbon as a reductant?
A carbide can be formed instead of the pure metal e.g. TiC
4 of 11
Can aluminium be extracted using carbon?
No because aluminium is more reactive than C so can't be displaced/reduced
5 of 11
What is the electrode equation for aluminium?
Al3+ + 3e- ---> Al
6 of 11
What is the risk of using hydrogen for extraction?
It is an explosive gas
7 of 11
What can SO2 be used to produce?
Sulphuric acid
8 of 11
What does aluminium have to be dissolved in before being electrolysed?
Cryolite
9 of 11
What is the anode made of in aluminium electrolysis?
Graphite
10 of 11
Why does the anode in electrolysis have to be replaced frequently?
Because it contains carbon which when reacted with oxygen produces carbon dioxide which then escapes as a gas
