Meosis

HideShow resource information
What is the difference between meiosis and mitosis?
Mitosis produces genetically identical copies of body cells and meiosis produces genetically varied copies of gametes.
1 of 13
What does diploid mean?
Two copies of every chromosome, 23 pairs. One maternal and one paternal (2n)
2 of 13
What does haploid mean?
One copy of every chromosome, 23. (n)
3 of 13
What does homologous chromosomes mean?
Same gene but different alleles.
4 of 13
What creates variation in meiosis and in which stages?
Independent assortment-Metaphase 1, crossing over-prophase 1 and Independent alignment in metaphase 2.
5 of 13
What is the first stage of meiosis? What happens?
Prophase, DNA condenses and appears, centrioles migrate, homologous chromosomes form bivalent.
6 of 13
What is the second stage of meiosis? What happens?
Metaphase, spindle fibres form and attach to centromeres, homologous chromosomes pair and line up.
7 of 13
What is the third stage of meiosis? What happens?
Anaphase, the spindle firbes shorten and homologous chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles.
8 of 13
What is the fourth stage of meiosis? What happens?
Telophase, the nuclear envelope pinches in and to daughter cells are created.
9 of 13
What is the firth stage of meiosis? What happens?
Prophase 2, centrioles move to opposite poles, new spindle fibres form.
10 of 13
What is the sixth stage of meiosis? What happens?
Metaphase 2, the spindle fibres attach to centromeres.
11 of 13
What is the seventh stage of meiosis? What happens?
Anaphase 2, the spindles shorten and sister chromotids are pulled to opposite poles.
12 of 13
What is the final stage of meiosis? What happens?
Telophase 2, membrane pinches in and four haploid daughter cells created.
