Multi-store model

?
Who was the MSM proposed by?
Atkinson and Shriffin 1968
1 of 13
MSM- What does memory consist of?
3 Stores- sensory model, short term memory and long term memory
2 of 13
MSM- how does information pass from store to store?
In a linear way
3 of 13
MSM- What are STM and LTM?
Unitary stores
4 of 13
MSM- What is sensory memory?
Information you get from your senses eg sights and sounds
5 of 13
MSM- How does sensory information go into your short term memory?
If you pay attention to something in the environment
6 of 13
MSM- How is information converted to long term memory?
If it's rehearsed
7 of 13
MSM- What are each stores' characteristics in terms of capacity, duration and encoding?
STM: capacity- 7+/-2 items of information, duration- 18-10 seconds, encoding- mostly acoustic. LTM: capacity- limitless, duration- up to a life time, encoding- mainly semantically
8 of 13
Outline the findings of a study that supports the multi-store model.
Peterson and Peterson's- Found that participants could only accurately recall without rehearsing after a very short amount of time, suggesting that STM and LTM are separate stores.
9 of 13
How does Glanzer and Cunitz' study support the MSM?
Participants remembered the first few and last few words presented to them which supports the existence of separate STM and LTM because they observed a primacy and recency effect.
10 of 13
Outline a case study that supports the MSM.
Clive Wearing- had severe anterograde amnesia, his STM was very limited but his LTM was unaffected, suggesting that STM and LTM memory are separate.
11 of 13
Explain how this case study could also reject MSM.
Clive lost his episodic memory but not this procedural memory which suggests there may be several types of LTM
12 of 13
Suggest another study that rejects the MSM.
Bahrick- 80% ex-students were able to accurately match names to fellow ex-pupils 25 years after graduating- kept in LTM without rehearsal
