What did Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) do?
First described the MSM.
2 of 9
Components of the MSM - Outline Sensory memory
( composed of several stores, the eye, ears, nose, fingers, tongue etc.) the sensory stores are constantly receiving information, if a persons attention is focused on one of the sensory stores , then data is transferred to STM.

Components of the MSM - Outline Short term memory
information here will disappear (decay) relatively quickly if isn't rehearsed. It will also disappear if new information enters STM pushing out (or displacing) the original information (because STM had limited capacity)

Components of the MSM - Outline Long term memory
Atkinson and Shiffrin said that information is moved from STM and LTM through rehearsal the more something is rehearsed the more lasting the memory will be this kind of rehearsal is referred to as maintenance rehearsal (which is largely verbal)
5 of 9
A strength to Atkinsons and Shiffrins (1968) MSM and its stores.
The sensory store has very limited capacity. Sperling (1960) found that Information decays rapidly in the sensory store.

What does Sperlings (1960) strength to Atkinsons and Shiffrins (1968) sensory memory suggest/show?
That the sensory memory does in fact have limited capacity.
7 of 9
A limitation to Atkinsons and Shiffrins (1968) MSM.
The MSM is to simplified. Baddeley and Hitch (1974) said that the STM has its own seperate number of stores.

What does Baddeley and Hitch (1974) limitation to Atkinsons and Shiffrins (1968) MSM suggest/show?
That the MSM is to limited and simplified.
