What is the working memory model?
Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch proposed this alternative model to explain STM. The STM is not one store but a number of different stores.

What is the STM made up of?
The central executive, the visuospatial sketchpad and the phonological loop.

What does the central executive do?
The central executive monitors and controls the two slave systems and focuses their attention.

What does the phonological loop do?
The phonological loop is for auditory information, it is subdivided into the phonological store for remembering speech sounds and the articulatory process which acts like an inner voice, silently repeating words.

What is the visuospatial sketchpad for?
The visuospatial sketchpad is for visual information.

What is the third slave system and what does it do?
The episodic buffer, it links information from the other slave systems into a single unit, with time sequencing.
