Memory terms

?
Capacity
This measures how much can be held in memory. It is represented in terms of bits of information, such as numbers digits.
1 of 9
Coding
Is the way information is changed so that it can be stored in the memory. There are three main ways in which information can be encoded (changed): 1. visual (picture), 2. acoustic (sound), 3. semantic (meaning).
2 of 9
Duration
A mesure of how long a memory lasts before it is no longer available.
3 of 9
Long Term Memory
Your memory for events that have happened in the past. This lasts anywhere between from 2 minuets to 100 years. LTM has a potentially unlimited capacity and duration and tends to be coded semantically.
4 of 9
Short Term Memory
Your memory for immediate events. STMs are measured in seconds and in minuets rather than hours and days. They disappear unless they are rehearsed. STM also has a limited capacity of about 4 items or chunks and tends to be coded acoustically.
5 of 9
Multi-Store Memory
An explanation of memory based on three separate memory stores, and how information is passed between them.
6 of 9
Sensory Register
Information collected by your eyes, ears, nose and so on. Information is retained for a very brief amount of time by sensory registers (less than half a second).
7 of 9
Central Executive
Monitors and coordinates all other mental functions in working memory. It has limited a limited capacity and deals with only one piece of information at a time.
8 of 9
Episodic Buffer
Acts as a 'backup' (temporary) store for information which communicates with both long term memory and the slave system components of working memory.
