Topic 1- Coding, capacity and duration of memory

?
Coding
The format in which information is stored in the various memory stores.
1 of 7
Capacity
The amount of information that can be held in a memory store
2 of 7
Duration
The length of time information can be held in memory
3 of 7
Short term memory
The limited capacity memory store. Coding is mainly acoustic, capacity is between 5-9 items, duration is between about 18-30 seconds
4 of 7
Long term memory
The permanent memory store. Coding is mainly semantic, it has an unlimited capacity and can store memories for up to a lifetime.

Alan Baddely-research on coding
Gave a different list of words to 4 groups of participants to remember. Pp tended to do worse with acoustically similar words-STM recall. After 20 mins Pp did worse with semantically similar words. Suggests info is coded semantically in LTM.

Evaluation-research on coding
Quite artificial stimuli rather than meaningful stimuli. Word lists had no personal meaning to Pp, meaning we should be cautious when generalising it to different kinds of memory tasks. Limited application.
