Social Action Perspective (Bottom Up/ Free will).
Emphasis on people taking action, on directing their own behaviour, on their own free will and agency. Also known as an Interpretive Perspective as it sees people interpreting and giving meaning to a situation and to the actions/motives of others.

The process of interaction (SBAP).
S-Our Self concept, at any time, leads to: B-Our Behaviour, what we say/do, which leads to: A-other people make an Actual response, which leads to P-our Perception of the responses.

Max Weber (1864-1920).
Referred to two types of understanding: 'Aktuelles verstehen'- direct observation and 'Erklarendes verstehen'- Putting yourself in someone elses shoes. Very important for ideas arounf health and nursing (compassion, empathy).

Illness experiences are subjective adn individual and dependant on patients actions and interactions with others.

Deviance and Stereotypes.
Deviance- Something which is not normal- a deviation from the norm. Stereotypes- Oversimplified images of views and groups of people.

Deviance- Absolutist, Statistical, Normative (Relative).
Absolutist- distinguishes conformity from nonconformity. Statistical- A behvaiour is considered abnormal if it does not occur frequently. Normative- violoation of a norm held in social circles by the majority of people.

Deviance and crime.
Functionalism- Crime has positive functions for society, acts as a safety value until dysfunctional then must be stopped. Marxism- Crime occurs due to conflict from peoples unequal position in the social structure.

Deviance and crime cont.
Social Action Theory- Different groups/ subcultures in society develop different values and so deviate from the norms and values of the dominant group.

Labelling- Drug users (Becker 1963)
Deviance is relative. It is not the act that is inherently deviant but the meanings that other people give to that act. Labelling people as deviant causes them to become deviant. The self-fulfilling prophecy.
