What is prediction error?
How surprising the result error e.g. high prediction error would mean that the result was really unexpected
1 of 6
What does the Rescorla-Wagner rule suggest?
The amount learnt is proportional to the prediction error e.g. if you know what will happen then you won't learn much new
2 of 6
What ways can we find out what part of the brain is associated with memory?
Causational: Lesions, in patients with brain lesions we can study whether this affected the memory or not, correlational: brain imaging, we can look at what part of the brain is active whilst using memory
3 of 6
What are the benefits of researching with lesions?
It shows the parts of the brain that are directly linked with memory
4 of 6
What are the benefits/ negatives of imaging?
Good because it shows parts of the brain that are involved with memory, even if they're not necessary, not good because we can get false positives and also doesn't show whether the part of the brain is necessary or not
5 of 6
How do we know that arc protein is essential for memory?
In order to consolidate information into ltm, protein synthesis is needed - in a study antisense inhibition of arc protein synthesis impairs memory consolidation, also arc protein is increased after learning
