Mitosis and Meiosis

?
What is meiosis?
A form of nuclear division involving a reduction in the number of chromosomes in the parent cell to half that number in each of the daughter cells.
1 of 10
What happens if meiosis did not occur?
The number of chromosomes would double from one generation to the next.
2 of 10
What is the significance of meiosis?
1. Meiosis produces four genetically different haploids - 2. The haploid gametes ensure the diploid number of chromosomes in the next generation.
3 of 10
What happens during anaphase?
The centromeres split so that each sister chromatid has one centromere. The spindle fibres attached to the chromatids at the centromeres shorten and pull the chromatids apart at the centromere.

What happens during telophase?
The chromo. reach the poles as the nuclear membrane reforms and the nucleoli reappear. The spindle fibres depolymerise. The chromo. begin to uncoil and lengthen into the expanded chromatin that is present during interphase. The centrioles replicate.

What is the significance of mitosis?
1. Produces two cell that are genetically identical to the parent cell, giving it genetic stability. - 2.Mitosis leads to growth of organism and allow for repair of tissues/replacement of dead cells.
6 of 10
What is the contents of a non-dividing nucleus called?
Chromatin
7 of 10
What does meiosis involve?
A single replication of chromosomes in the parent cell, followed by two cycles of nuclear and cell division. Thus a single diploid cell gives rise to four haploid cells.
8 of 10
What happens during cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm/cell)?
In animal cells division normally begins with the formation of a cleavage furrow around the cell. The furrow becomes deeper until it cuts through the cell, producing two new cells.
9 of 10
What happens during metaphase?
The spindle fibres rearrange the chromosomes in one plane at the equator of the cell
