4 Humours
The belief that the human body contained blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. If they were unbalanced then people would become ill. To balance them people would try bleeding and purging as well as forcing themselves to be sick.

Miasma
The belief that bad smells were the cause of disease. People would walk around holding flowers under their noses to prevent becoming ill from miasmas.

God
The belief that God was the cause of illness because he was testing their faith or was displeased with them. People would go on pilgrimage to prevent God from punishing them.

Astrology
The belief that diseases were cause by the alignment of the stars and planets at that moment in time or what they were like when the person was born.

Hippocrates
Hippocrates was an ancient Greek doctor who created the theory of the 4 humours. He did not believe that God caused disease. His treatments were usually dieting and exercising but he also used purging and bleeding.

Galen
Claudius Galen was a Greek doctor who worked in Ancient Rome. He developed Hippocrates' theory of the 4 humours creating his own theory of opposites. He carried out dissections on dead bodies.

Cures
Some of the cures included bloodletting, purging, herbal remedies, praying, pasting and going on pilgrimage.

Prevention
Some methods to prevent illness were living a Christian or religious life, carrying lucky charms, purifying the air, exercising, dieting, bathing and self harming.

The Black Death 1348-49
The Black Death was a disease carried by rats that spread throughout Britain killing around a third of the population.

Preventing the Black Death
People tried to prevent getting the disease by cleaning the streets, praying, smelling bad smells and carrying herbs around with them.

Bubonic Plague
The Bubonic plague was the main plague during the Black Death. It had nearly a 100% mortality rate and took within 24 hours to kill someone. It caused buboes under the arms and in the neck. Without treatment it would spread throughout the body.
