What did people belive caused disease in 1350-1750?
Punishment from God, humours out of balance, superstitions, astronomy, miasma,.

Hold bread against boils then burying it, wipping, mediciinal powers, bleeding, purges, spiritual.

How did people try to prevent the black death?
Praying, eating cool things, tidying rubbish, keeping air moving by ringing bells and having birds, avoid the four stinks-stables, feilds, streets, carcacess, have clean house+fire. Use herbs

When the first European medical school open his ideas were basic traaining and were used of treatments.

Went to medical school, used urine charts, zodiac man, astrology. Based treatments on Galen, got medicines from apthecaries. They were expensive

Used traditional remedies, treated sore throats, stomacha ches, temperature, broken bones, child birth. Based remedies on herbs, charms and spells.

Trained but no qualification, cheaper than physician, mixed herbs and remedies for physicans.

Cared for poor and sick, provided food and shelter, monks wrote medical texts, didn't reat contajous people, didn't look for scientific cure, fully supported Galen, huamn dissection was forbiden, belived in superstitions.

What significance did the printing press have?
Had an emormous effect, before books had to be painstakingly hand written. Printing press allowed information to be spread.

Didn't have much short term impact- treatments stayed the same, many refused t belive him.

Whay influence did the royal society have?
Set up in 1645- doctors met weekly to discuss new ideas like physics, botany, astromon. CharlesII and Samual Pepyes attended. Allowed ideas to spread as they wrote books.

What influence did Willian Harvey have?
Had little short term impact, still much to discover about blood, ideas only gradually accepted. Still didn't improve knowledge of what causes disease.

How did Pasture come up with his Germ theory?
Was employed by brewer to understand why wine was going bad- he discovered microbes he heated the wine, it killed the microbes.

What did Robert Kock do?
He used dyes to identify microbes. He identified anthrax, and bacteria that cause, septicamia, tuberculosis, cholera.

How was water supplied in 1350?
Drinking and washing water was carried from rivers, collected from pumps or water carriers.

How was water supplied by 1750?
Many still got water from pumps, welld were dug but cesspits would leak into water supply. There was a network of wodden pipes under London for wealthy families- water sat in tanks in cellars it often went stagnant.

How was waste disposed in 1350?
Open sewers takingwaste away but was simply emtied into rivers or onto the streets.

How was wate disposed in 1750?
Night soil men carried waste away. Poor people couldn't afford night soil men so dumped waste on rivers and streets.

What were the streets like in 1350?
Paving was poor, streets were muddy with open drains. Animals bought for slaughter added to the dirt. Rakers were employed to keep streets clean but it wasn't enough.

What were the streets like in 1750?
Streets were cobled of paved but ther was still more mud than paving. Streets sloped down to a central drain but it was often blocked with rubbish and animal droppings. Rakers were employed. Law required people to clean outside their home each day.
