What public health projects did the Romans spend their wealth on?
Aquaducts, Public latrines, Public baths, Sewage systems and Gymnasiums

What are aquaducts?
Tall bridge structures to carry water to cities providing them with a clean supply

What were public baths like?
Baths were used after the gym often- Caldarium (Hot bath), Tepidarium (Warm bath), Fridgidarium (Cold bath))

Why was public health importanty for the army?
Their army was the basis of their power so it was important that soldiers were healthy to fight

No- It was spent on public services to increase public hygiene therefore preventing the spread of illness

Claudius Galen was a Greek physician from Pergamum and was trained at Alexandria

What was the only way Galen could dissect humans?
He dissected bodies that were hanged or bodies washed from cemetries during flooding

Why was Roman medical knowledge limited?
The Romans didn't allow dissection of human bodies so only animals were dissected e.g monkeys

What are some of the mistakes Galen made on anatomy?
The jawbone was two bones (like a dogs), there were blood vestles in the brain, muscles were attatched to the bone and blood was created in the liver

Hippocrates

What is the theory of the four humours?
Black/yellow bile, phlegm and blood were the four humours. These needed to be balenced as if they wern't and illness would be formed

Galen

It was based off the four humours- A cold cucumber could cure a hot fever and a hot pepper could cure a cold

Galen maintained the practise of clinical observation- Patients were carefully observed

What was Roman surgery like?
Practical first aid was good , the Romans developed the caesarean and many surgical tools however doctors didn't have anaesthetics, only herbal remedies

When camps were sited next to swamps soldiers could get maleria
