What did Egyptian doctors study?
The doctors were highly trained, studying the medical papyri records of cases and treatments.

Why were specialist doctors developed?
They worked for the rich clients, for example the Pharaoh, and so they were wealthy enough to spend their time improving their medical knowledge.

Why were dissections not allowed?
Religion said that the body was needed for the afterlife.

What did Egyptian doctors know about the body?
Doctors knew about the heart and anatomy, but they did not always know what each part did. Egyptians embalmers may have known more but they were considered unclean and were generally cut off from most people.

Where did the ingredients for every day treatments come from?
Most ingredients, for example honey, were local but some ingredients were brought in by traders, for example cinnamon and pepper came from India and China; malachite from North Africa.

What was the Channel Theory?
The theory said that there were lots of channels leading from the heart that carried blood air and water around the body.

What did Egyptians believe caused disease?
Egyptians believed that disease was caused by undigested food rotting in the bowels, which would cause blockages in the channels and make people ill.
