The Theory Of Four Humours
The theory by Hippocrates that the body was made up of blood, phlegm, black bile, choler (yellow bile) which had to be balanced for a person to be healthy. An imbalance of these would lead to illness. (5th century BC)

The Theory Of Opposites
This theory by Galen was build off of Hippocrates' theory. Galen added that if you had too much of one humors you needed a certain diet to balance it out. E.g a cold is excess phlegm which could be cures by something hot and dry (2nd century)

This theory was also by Galen and it was the belief that disease was caused by bad smells. (2nd century)

The theory that germs appear suddenly in dead/ rotting/ diseased material. Based off of maggots appearing in rotten egg. (1668)

This theory by Louis Pasteur was that disease was caused by microorganisms. This is the only medical theory that is still used. (1861)
