Questions of morality that are raised by medical situations

Abortion
Deliberate termination of pregnancy by the removal and termination of a foetus

Embryo
A collection of cells that develops when a sperm joins with an egg; a foetus before it is 4 months old

IVF
A form of fertility treatment where doctors extract a couple's egg and sperm and fuse them together to create an embryo, and then insert it back into the woman's womb

Suicide
The process of taking your own life

Assisted suicide
Providing a seriously ill person with the means to commit suicide

Euthanasia
When someone is helped to die without pain before they would have died naturally

Voluntary euthanasia
The situation where someone dying in pain asks another person to end their life painlessly

Involuntary euthansia
Ending another person's life painlessly when they are unable to ask, but when there is a good reason for believing that they would want death (e.g. switching off a life support machine)

Active euthanasia
When deliberate steps are taken to end someone's life (e.g. lethal injection)

Passive euthanasia
When treatment to help the person to live longer is stopped (e.g. when a patient is not resuscitated)

Quality of Life
Being free from undue pain, anxiety and pain; the extent to which life is meaningful or pleasurable

Fertility treatment
Medical treatment that is used when people want to have children, but are unable to conceive naturally

Pro-life
The view that abortion is wrong

Pro-choice
The view that it is the couple's choice as to whether they want an abortion or not

Clone
An individual organism or cell that is genetically identical to another one

Sacred or Sanctity
Both words meaning holy, having something or God or the divine

Genetic engineering
The deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material
