What is an establishing shot?
A long or extreme long shot showing the spatial relationship between, or location of characters, objects and settings. Used typically at the start of a scene

What is a shot/reverse shot
During dialogue, the camera cuts back and forth along the central line of one character to another.

What is the 30 degree rule?
The camera angle between two consecutives shots not move no less than 30 degrees for continuity

What are Cross-cut/Parallel edit(s)?
This is cutting between actions in two or more locations to give the impression that more than one thing is happening, often used is EastEnders

What are Cutaways?
A shot of something that is related to, but outside the main action of a scene, used in Family Guy A LOT

What is match of action/action match?
Two shots are linked by 2 framings of the same action, for example a character begins to move or speak in one shot and their movement or dialogue continues in the next shot. Used to indicate the passing of time.

What is eyeline match?
A cut between 2 shots. A character looks at something and in the next shot, we see what they see, such as the person they are speaking to.

What's a re-establishing shot?
Another long shot used to reinforce the setting or show it has changed.

What is the 180 degree rule?
The assurance that all action takes part in a 180 line of sight of the camera, used to maintain continuity and insure that character's positions aren't altered

What is the effect of slow motion?
To linger on a scene to intensify drama or romance

What is the effect of fast motion?
Rushes through a scene to intensify comedy or action

What is the effect of a freeze frame?
Focuses attention on one image to signify ambiguity, death or significance.

What is a continuity cut transition?
A cut that takes the viewer smoothly, subtly and logically from one shot to another.

What is a jump cut transition?
An abrupt, disorientating cut in the middle of a shot to another scene or time

What is a fade-in transition?
A shot that gradually appears from a blank screen

What is a fade-out transition?
A shot that gradually disappears from a shot

What is a wipe transition?
A line across the screen that pushes one shot off the screen and replaces it with another one

What is a dissolve transition
The end of the shot remains on the screen and gradually fades out after the next shot has started. Often done to show passing of time.

- Sets the plot in motion
- Reinforces a genre
Anchors and defines characters

What is the effect of front light?
Captures colour and detail; such as facial expressions, can look dramatic, but 2D

Makes the scene look sinister or threatening

Makes an object/character/setting look evil or sinister

Gives 3D appearance; adds drama; can look sinister

Creates halos, silouhettes; creates feelings of mystery and intimacy

- Conveys character's personality or status
- Draws attention to contrast between characters
- Sets time frame of scene
- Anchors setting or culture
- May be symbolic or stereotypical

What is denotation?
The literal meaning of a sign e.g. A man gives a diamond ring

What is a connotation?
The agreed meanings attached to a sign; e.g. a diamond ring may suggest love, engagement or wealth

What is a Symbol?
A type of sign that stands for something specific.
