Media influences on aggression - Gaming

?
How could this phenomena be tested?
Three methods: Experimental, Correlational, and Longitudinal research (also includes meta-analysis)
1 of 12
Mortal Kombat experimental study
1 group played MK whilst group 2 played non-violent equiv=PGA Golf for 10 mins, then TCRTT
2 of 12
What is TCRTT?
Standardised measure of aggression in which students blast white noise at opponents at diff volumes
3 of 12
What were the findings of this experiment?
Ps playing MK blasted significantly higher levels of white noise at opponent=mean level of 5.97 decibels to 4.60
4 of 12
What are the methodological faults of an experiment?
TRCTT doesn't generalise to real life, no involvement of fear of retaliation=both decrease validity
5 of 12
Juvenile offenders correlational study
227 offenders with history of aggressive behaviour, structured interviews, found that aggression significantly correlated with playing+enjoyment of violent games
6 of 12
Methodological issues with correlational studies
Can study realistic aggression issues, however: issue of bi-directional ambiguity, cannot infer the relationship between 2 variables,
7 of 12
What other variables could be involved?
Mental health and family violence which are not taken into account with a correlation
8 of 12
TV viewing longitudinal study
1037 Ps studied until age 26, found time spent watching TV was indicator of convictions for aggressive crimes, ASPD was also likely in Ps who watched most TV, it was the amount of TV that was most import factor
9 of 12
Meta analysis of 136 studies like these
Found that expose to violent games associated with increased aggressive behaviours, effect of video games on aggression greater than second hand smoking on lung cancer
10 of 12
Issues with using longitudinal studies + meta analysis
Ps drop out over time, issue of publication bias over significant results, other sources of violence interact with media,
11 of 12
Problem of game difficulty
Argued aggression is caused by the frustration of the games+not the violent content, link between violence+video games too simplistic
