What are the theorists needed within the Genre Essay?
Lippman, Altman, Neale, Jameson, Fowler and Konigsberg
1 of 17
What does Altman say?
Suggests that each genre has a recognisable ''repertoire of elements'', through which we can establish a framework of assumptions and predictions
2 of 17
What does Lippman say?
He suggests humans feel the need to categorise in order to cope with the world and genre is a good way of classifying texts.
3 of 17
What does Neale say?
Suggests it is important to add a fresh twist to the repertoire of film to prevent people becoming bored. Also there must be a balance of 'repetition and difference'
4 of 17
What does Jameson say?
That the formulaic nature of genre texts leads to lack of originality and a culture of ''bland and trivial texts''
5 of 17
What does Fowler say?
Suggests genre films do better at the box office than less easily categorised films because they have an established audience
6 of 17
What does Konigsberg say?
He argues that genre texts offer a different viewing experience than indpendent films due to us being able to personalise it as it is less individualised
7 of 17
What is Konigsberg's second point?
That the reliability of the genre experience allows us to reflect on universal dilemmas, moral conflicts and deep psychological needs
8 of 17
What theorists are needed within the Representation Essay?
Butler, Pickering, Adorno and Dyer
9 of 17
What does Butler say?
He believes stereotypes are largely created through roles and that characters have a function and purpose to play that fits the stereotype. These roles are associated with particular people and help to create overall view
10 of 17
What does Pickering say?
Pickering argues stereotypes can be harmful to social groups creating ''biased and limited'' representations
11 of 17
What does Adorno say?
Adorno provides some justification of stereotypes in the media, he argues stereotypes are essential to help organise and structure the narrative - also help to enable communication between audience and producer
12 of 17
What does Dyer say?
Dyer argues that how harmful a representation is depends on the extent of its repetition and how far it is perceived as 'real'. When audiences know the text is not related to reality, even negative stereotypes do not harm
13 of 17
What theorists are needed within the Media Language Essay?
Sassure, Barthes and Jakobson
14 of 17
What does Sassure say?
Developed the idea of semiotic analysis. Language is created by a system of signs which are created when a signifier triggers a signified. These signs have become familiar through repetition. Signs combine to create codes.
15 of 17
What does Barthes say?
Suggested language is not limited to a single meaning but can be intepreted in many ways. Identified 5 common language codes. Hermeneutic or engima-central mystery. Semantic-parts of the texts with additional meanings. Everyone has different meaning
16 of 17
What does Jakobson say?
Suggests languages are also a system of functions - signs can be combined by the producer to functions intended to establish relationship. Conative function - combines signs to create image. Phatic function - Provides key to open conversation
